Does driving around the Coventry ring road confuse you? Ever wondered what the rules actually are for exiting and entering correctly and safely? Are you adding to confusion and traffic build up without knowing it?
I see vehicles being driven incorrectly on the ring road every time I use it. There are rules about using the ring road that every driver should be following. From what I am seeing daily, I am sure some drivers are completely unaware what the rules are or have not worked it out from all the information given to them. This adds to confusion, congestion and the potential for accidents.
Here are my top 5 tips for safely dealing with one of Coventry’s business parts of the road network.

Here are my top 5 tips for safely dealing with one of Coventry’s business parts of the road network.
1) Obey the speed limit – The speed limit on slip roads entering and exiting the ring road and on the ring road itself is 40 mph. Speeding and aggressively undertaking can attract points and a fine as well as increase the risk of an accident putting others and yourself in greater danger.
2) The correct lane of travel is the RIGHT hand lane: On the ring road gangway signs clearly state that if you do not require the next exit off you keep in the right hand lane for ALL other traffic. This gives plenty of time and room for traffic to enter onto the ring road in the left hand lane without you obstructing their path.
3) Change lanes to exit at the right time: The earliest opportunity to move over to the left lane to exit is just after the gangway sign indicates. This keeps you safely away from traffic entering and exiting as you pass the exit before the one you want. NB: Make sure you check your mirrors and blind spots before any lane change.

4) Who has priority when entering and exiting? Traffic on the Ring road has priority. Traffic entering should match their speed to the traffic exiting (anything up to 40mph). However, drivers who are entering on and exiting off share the same slip road so both drivers should show courtesy and merge on and off in turn as though you were margining into queuing traffic. Safety is the priority not aggressively positioning because you were first!
5) Move over for aggressive tailgaters: If you see one of these in your rear view mirror do the safest thing. Signal and move over to the left lane when safe, let them by and then back to the right hand lane after they pass. Keep cool. Let the local constabulary catch them at some other time. Better to avoid problems by ignoring aggressive drivers rather than escalate things by stubbornly remaining in the right hand lane forcing them to undertake. This would put yourself, your passengers and vehicles on the road at risk.
